2. Master Symptom-to-Solution Matrix

1

Infinite Brownout Reboot Loop

Symptom: Board powers up, LEDs blink for 5–15 seconds, then board abruptly resets in a loop.

Root Cause: Peak GSM TDMA RF transmit bursts draw 2.0A for 577µs. PC USB ports or Arduino 5V pins sag below 3.4V UVLO.

Verified Fix: Supply 5V–9V ≥2A DC into barrel jack or use a 3.7V 18650 Li-ion battery. Solder a 1000µF Low-ESR capacitor across VCC4.0 and GND.

2

Silent Serial Receive (Arduino AT Commands Ignored)

Symptom: Arduino receives boot text from U_TXD, but A7 never acknowledges commands sent on U_RXD.

Root Cause: Onboard SP3232 RS-232 driver (U5) Pin 12 (ROUT1) actively drives U_RXD HIGH, overpowering the Arduino's resistor divider.

Verified Fix: Snip or lift Pin 12 (ROUT1) of the SP3232 chip, or use an active 3.3V buffer (ESP32 / 74LVC245).

3

Active GPS Antenna "Zero Satellites" Blackout

Symptom: AT+GPS=1 succeeds, NMEA sentences stream, but satellite count is 00 and status remains 'V' after 1 hour outdoors.

Root Cause: The A7 PCB has NO DC bias voltage on GPS port J4. The active antenna’s unpowered internal LNA attenuates signals by −25dB.

Verified Fix: Switch to a passive ceramic patch antenna, or add a 47nH–100nH RF choke inductor from 3.3V/4.0V to the GPS antenna trace.

4

PWR_KEY Polarity Inversion (SIM800 vs A7)

Symptom: Pulling PWR_KEY to Ground fails to start the module.

Root Cause: On SIM800L, PWRKEY is active-LOW. On the AI-Thinker A7, PWR_KEY is active-HIGH.

Verified Fix: Connect PWR_KEY (P2 Pin 11) to VCC4.0 / VBAT for 2.5 seconds to turn ON the module.

5

Cyclic GPS Heap Memory Crash (~100 Cycles)

Symptom: After cycling GPS on/off ~100 times, AT+GPS=1 fails or returns empty data.

Root Cause: Firmware memory leak in the RDA8951 RTOS GPS task teardown routine.

Verified Fix: Keep AT+GPS=1 running continuously, or issue a soft reset (AT+RST=1) or hardware reset pulse every 50 cycles.

6

Baseband Freeze on AT+AGPS

Symptom: Issuing AT+AGPS=1 freezes the module; serial stops responding.

Root Cause: Sending AT+AGPS=1 while GPS is already active or without cellular GPRS data connection.

Verified Fix: Ensure AT+GPS=0 first, verify AT+CGATT=1 and AT+CGACT=1,1 before issuing AT+AGPS=1.

7

AT Command Parser Corruption during AT+GPSRD

Symptom: Sending SMS or HTTP requests fails with syntax errors or garbage characters.

Root Cause: AT+GPSRD=1 dumps multi-line NMEA data directly into the AT serial stream every second.

Verified Fix: Send AT+GPSRD=0 to stop redirection before sending cellular AT commands.

8

Cellular Network Registration Denied (+CREG: 3)

Symptom: SIM is ready (+CPIN: READY), but AT+CREG? returns status 3 (Registration Denied).

Root Cause: Target country has shut down 2G GSM cellular networks (e.g. USA AT&T, Australia, Singapore).

Verified Fix: Verify 2G availability (T-Mobile 2G guard bands in US; broad 2G in Europe, Africa, LatAm, Asia) or use an international IoT roaming SIM (1NCE, Things Mobile).

9

Voice Call Drops Instantly (NO CARRIER)

Symptom: Dialing a phone number drops immediately without ringing.

Root Cause: Missing trailing semicolon in dial command.

Verified Fix: Always include the semicolon: ATD+1234567890;.

10

SIM Card Memory Full (SMS Stops Arriving)

Symptom: Module suddenly stops receiving incoming SMS messages.

Root Cause: Micro-SIM cards store only 20–30 messages in flash. Once full, the network rejects new deliveries.

Verified Fix: Regularly purge inbox on startup: AT+CMGD=1,4 (deletes all messages).

3. Emergency Factory Recovery Command Script

If your A7 module is exhibiting erratic behavior, send this exact sequence in a terminal (115200 baud, CR+LF) to reset NVRAM to factory defaults:

// 1. Reset modem parameters to factory defaults
AT&F
OK

// 2. Clear open sockets and GPRS stack
AT+CIPSHUT
SHUT OK

// 3. Turn off GPS and GPSRD redirection
AT+GPSRD=0
OK
AT+GPS=0
OK

// 4. Set baud rate cleanly to 9600 (or 115200)
AT+IPR=9600
OK

// 5. Save all current settings to non-volatile EEPROM
AT&W
OK

// 6. Execute full software restart
AT+RST=1
OK
